Liliuokalani Park and Garden

If you enjoy seeing beautiful landscapes, Liliuokalani Park and Gardens is the place to go. The park was named after Queen Liliuokalani, the last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii. It's located close to Hilo International Airport and is right next to Hilo's most popular hotels, so if you're a visitor to the island, chances are you won't have any trouble finding it. Most of the park is made up of classic Japanese gardens. They were created in 1917 to serve as a tribute to early Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. Decorations found all throughout the gardens include pagodas, Japanese stone lanterns, koi ponds and more.

Coconut Island is a small island connected to the rest of the park by a footbridge. It's also known as Moku ola, meaning “island of life” in the Hawaiian language, as it used to have an ancient temple dedicated to healing. The island is a great place to visit after you've gone through the park. Activities to enjoy there include picnics and swimming. Coconut Island is also highly appreciated by sightseers, as it gives a great view of Hilo Bay and Downtown Hilo. Whether you're visiting alone or with your family, there's a high chance you'll enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
