Makena State Park

Looking for a prime location to enjoy Maui's sparkling blue water and clean white sands, with a very special added bonus? Try Makena State Park, just south of Wailea. In addition to its pristine beaches, the park offers a breathtaking view of the 360 foot dormant volcanic cinder cone, Pu-u Olai. Makena State Park allows easy access to two beaches, Big Beach and Little Beach. The two are just a short five minute walk apart. Big Beach, with more than a mile of coastline and easy access to vivid offshore reefs, is ideal for snorkelers and swimmers. Little Beach, though much smaller, also has an intriguing side: the local police are tolerant of nudity, in effect making it one of Hawaii's only clothing-optional beaches. Makena State Park has amenities such as restrooms, picnic tables, and trash cans, but no running water. Make sure to bring enough water to stay hydrated! No animals, alcohol, fires, or smoking are allowed in the park.
