Ala Moana Center

The Ala Moana Center is one of the most popular shopping malls in all of Hawaii. Officially, the Ala Moana Center is the largest open-air mall in the world, and the second most profitable in the United States.

This shopping center is on the island of Oahu in the major metropolitan city of Honolulu. It’s hard to believe this area was a swampland before businessman Lowell Dillingham began building this shopping center in 1957. The mall was first opened in 1959 with many local stores and a few bigger names such as Sears, Foodland, and F. W. Woolworth Company.

Travel experts believe this mall brings in around $1 billion dollars every year. There’s more than 340 stores here open for business every day. Some of the most popular stores here today include Nordstrom, Shirokiya, Macy’s, and Bloomingdale’s. The current area of this mall measures at 2,400,000 square feet.

In addition to the shops, there are many casual and fine dining experiences. A few restaurants located here include Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Genki Sushi, Assaggio, and Tanaka of Tokyo.

For people in the mood for a more casual dining experience, you can head over to the Makai Market Food Court. A few restaurants here include Mama’s Spaghetti House, Blue Water Shrimp, Cheeseburger Factory, and Chinatown Express.
